Another difference between these two types of dining furniture is that you will not find round or square dining tables very often. The formal dining table is almost exclusively rectangular. However, you will find many kitchen nooks with round or square tables because these rooms are generally smaller and sometimes oddly shaped. It is very common for a nook to be shaped like half of an octagon and stick out away from the house. Or, sometimes the nook is square and sticks out. The square nooks can house a square table or a rectangular one depending on how far you can extend your dining furniture into the kitchen. Finally, there are some materials that you would never find in a dining room that are especially nice for the kitchen. For example, a table top covered in tile. Tiles are extremely easy to clean up after meals because they will not absorb liquids like wood. If you have a table with a tile top, then it would never be used in the dining room since the dining table is almost always covered with a tablecloth and it would be silly to cover the easy to clean surface with something that needs to be washed.
Houses with a breakfast nook or eat-it-kitchen typically have a formal dining room area intended to take dinner or supper into, depending where you are from. To make the most of the space, bench seating is recommended with fold-up seats allowing extra storage in that space. When that area is not in use, you can create a comfortable sitting area with plush pillows. When the area is in use, simply put the pillows under the seating to allow more people around the table. Farm-style tables are making a big comeback. People are feeling more disconnected in this ultra-social-networking era, and want to visit with people face-to-face. The table needs to fit with the space, but also needs to be large enough to fit everyone's plates, utensils, platters of pancakes, eggs and bacon on.
Fixtures: Any breakfast nook needs a bay window with a bench fitted with comfortable bench cushions that can be used for lounging and sitting during the breakfast meal. Comfort should be the word of the day when choosing the seating. The table should also be just large enough to hold everyone's food, but not so large that it separates the family. Remember, togetherness is the idea. Lighting: A perfect nook ideally has a window on one side, to let in that glorious morning light from a sunrise. There is no better way to eat breakfast than with your loved ones, bathed in the warm rays of the sun to shake off that early morning chill.
