Some cabinets are designed specifically for certain collectibles. There are die-cast display cases that are designed to showcase miniature die-cast collectible cars. NASCAR fans who collect miniature versions of their favorite NASCAR drivers' cars can enjoy their collection in a case designed either in a stand alone version or a wall mounted version. For such a collection, glass shelves are usually desired so that all angles of the car can be seen and appreciated without having to take the car out. More handling equals more risk of damage or wear. Depending on the collectible, even natural oils from handling can depreciate the value of the collectible. Coins and stamps are especially susceptible to surface damage merely by handling.
Size is the first thing you need to consider. First, you need display cabinets that will fit in your store. You must also be able to fit it into your doorway (unless you assemble it yourself.) You will have a limited space in your store, so you want pieces that will fit your products and the store, with enough room for your customers to move around in and admire your products. This will take some planning, as you need to measure the size of your store, and plan out how many and how big your cabinet should be. Try to use paper and pen (or a software program) to plan out your floorspace, so you can choose the right size of cabinets.
Consider your current décor. Regardless of what type of furniture and furnishings you have, be sure your home display cabinet compliments it. There's nothing worse than buying a cabinet for the wrong reason and then finding out it that it does not "go" with what you currently have. So, think twice before acquiring that "bargain" curio display cabinet. Expand your horizons. Be sure to consider types of room display cabinets other than the traditional freestanding type, especially if you're limited on space. A wall-mounted corner display cabinet, for example, is a great way to show off your collection in a way that saves space. And if you have existing wall furniture or shelving, see if the manufacturer offers a wall display cabinet that matches what you have.
