For those of you looking to put their most loved and illustrious collections on display in their house for guests to see should probably invest in some type of display cabinetry, and here are a few guidelines on how to select something which will be right for your purposes. First of all, you need to take into account your current setting. What type furniture do you have in there, what materials are dominant in the room, how does the lighting complement the different details... etc... etc. You should make sure to analyze every single aspect and if you need to, hire the help of an interior designer, because there is nothing worse than buying mismatching furniture for your house, as it will rapidly transform it into something repulsive and undesirable.
Size is the first thing you need to consider. First, you need display cabinets that will fit in your store. You must also be able to fit it into your doorway (unless you assemble it yourself.) You will have a limited space in your store, so you want pieces that will fit your products and the store, with enough room for your customers to move around in and admire your products. This will take some planning, as you need to measure the size of your store, and plan out how many and how big your cabinet should be. Try to use paper and pen (or a software program) to plan out your floorspace, so you can choose the right size of cabinets.
Consider your collection's style. Room display cabinets should not dominate a collection. Instead, they should enhance it. If you have a collection of model 19th century sailing ships, for example, choose a cabinet with traditional styling that will give your collection a "period" feel. Regardless of style, however, be sure that your cabinet has adjustable shelves. Consider alternate locations. Most people who want curio cabinets tend to want to place them in a living room or den. If you think creatively, though, you might be able to find an innovative way to display your collection. Here's an idea: what about a display cabinet built underneath a kitchen counter or island? Since the kitchen is the most used room in many houses, you'll have more opportunities to view your collection if it's located here.
