Lighting is important in a nook area. Some nook areas look like an old pantry tucked away is a tiny room just off the kitchen, while others are open to the kitchen. In the tiny rooms, consider light, airy colors, track lighting or an antique chandelier. Also think about adding personal artwork to the space. If it is eastern facing, all the better to catch the morning sunlight, but the added electrical lighting will be nice on the gray and gloomy days. Consider other times of the day this space may be used. Homework time so the kids have a dedicated space to work in while being in close reach of a study-break snack, a reading area away from televisions, a place to draw or color, etc., then pick the appropriate lighting for those other needs.
Fixtures: Any breakfast nook needs a bay window with a bench fitted with comfortable bench cushions that can be used for lounging and sitting during the breakfast meal. Comfort should be the word of the day when choosing the seating. The table should also be just large enough to hold everyone's food, but not so large that it separates the family. Remember, togetherness is the idea. Lighting: A perfect nook ideally has a window on one side, to let in that glorious morning light from a sunrise. There is no better way to eat breakfast than with your loved ones, bathed in the warm rays of the sun to shake off that early morning chill.
If you are interested in being able to seat more people around your table and you do not have the kitchen nook space requirements to add more chairs, then you might consider bench seating. Free standing breakfast nook benches are similar to chairs in that they typically have four legs at the corners with perhaps a support leg or two in the center of a long bench. However, bench seats can accommodate more people than number of chairs they replace. Generally, you can fit one and a half people on a bench for every chair you replace. Kitchen bench seating is a great way to increase your seating capacity without making the table larger or squeezing in chairs uncomfortably.
