Generally thought to be comprised of a small table and either two or four chairs, dinette sets are made to fit into a small kitchen or breakfast nook. Suitable for a quick lunch or breakfast for two to four people, they are very functional where space is at a premium. When thinking of dinette sets, your mind may immediately go to the style of dining table popular in the 50's and 60's. These are still out there and going strong. Usually made with metal legs on the chairs and table, the tops today are a vinyl laminate with vinyl chair seats. These sets are generally available in bright colors such as red, yellow, or even black.
A breakfast nook by definition is a small space to eat small meals in. A breakfast nook, aka morning room, aka informal dining room, aka eat-in-kitchen surprisingly all mean different types of spaces you may be looking at. The breakfast nook is a small space in or near the kitchen typically with built-in seating such as benches with a long table, and windows facing east. A morning room is a small room off of the kitchen with eastern facing windows for the morning light. This space usually have comfortable chairs with a side table for holding cups of tea or coffee as one reads the morning paper. An informal dining room is off of the kitchen with a designated eating space or a half wall. The eat-in-kitchen is a small space for a bistro or cafe-style table or high-tops chairs at a breakfast bar.
The breakfast nook is a room next to the kitchen meant for a dining table and chairs so that families have a convenient place to eat more informal meals. So what makes breakfast nook furniture different than dining room furniture? The truth is that there is not much difference. Some furniture stores do not have sections specifically for breakfast nook furniture; they just put all the tables and chairs in a category known as dining furniture. However, there are some conventions that many people use to classify a dining set as either kitchen furniture or dining room furniture. First, breakfast nook sets s are generally less ornate and are made of more common materials. Dining room sets will have ornately carved table legs and often come in dark woods like cherry. Breakfast nook sets have simple legs and designs and are more often made of woods like pine or even chrome and Formica. The general rule is that kitchen tables and chairs are less formal than the ones for the formal dining room.
