If you were to randomly ask ten people what a "hutch" is, they would almost answer universally that it is a big wooden cabinet that sits in a dining room with dishes in it. Little if any thought would be given to the possibility that it could be a big wooden cabinet that sits in a kitchen. The funny thing is that the average kitchen is full of big furniture items. The stove, refrigerator, freezer, kitchen table and in some instances even the washer and dryer are all in the kitchen. The problem is that other than the kitchen table and chairs, most people don't envision a big piece of wood furniture in a kitchen.
Baskets and Copper: A traditional pairing of two warm materials- straw and copper can be a great focal point for a French country kitchen. This is an especially nice contrast when a cooler color such as blue or green is the dominant one in the room. Cookbooks: A collection of personal favorites, family treasures, or junior league cookbooks from your travels is both practical and pretty. You can combine books with figurines, mixing bowls, or other kitchen-appropriate items to prevent the display from becoming to heavy. Dry Goods: Dry goods such as flour, sugar, beans, and pastas can be stored in glass containers. Be sure to use airtight containers with tight fitting lids. If desired, you can even attach the lids permanently to the underside of the hutch shelving, creating a permanent storage place for spices or other light items.
When redesigning your kitchen and dining area, using dining room hutches will free up space in the kitchen and adds another cabinet to the dining area. The hutch area is used to store small cups, dishes or other knick knacks, while the buffet area is used for display or storage for others to see. The contemporary types sold today incorporate a buffet, sideboard and cabinets into one unit for ease of use. These hutches are not only used in the dining room, as many are made with sideboards for cutting or preparing food in the kitchen. Modern hutches can be found in oak, cherry, aluminum and even ash materials with a variety of hardware for accenting. Hardware for dining hutches will vary based on model, retailers and prices asked for each piece. There are many sideboards that are attached with nickel or steel hardware, but come in many finishes. Most models sold on the market today come with their own corresponding hardware and instructions for assembly, but for higher prices, assembly is not required.
