Benches have some benefits chairs can't offer. First, they can usually hold more people. Where chairs are pretty much one seat to a customer, it's not too tough to squeeze an extra person onto an indoor bench in the kitchen, especially if the extra people are children. In fact, a bench is an ideal solution for families who have a growing family and where space is at a premium.
If you use your table a lot for entertaining, you may want to go with a patterned fabric for your indoor bench. This will help cover up some of the smaller stains that may happen during meal time and save you a lot of time keeping the cushion clean. Of course, you can always add some Velcro or a zipper along one seam so that you can clean your cushion cover easily in the washing machine. Just be careful that you don't accidentally dry a material in the dryer that isn't pre-shrunk. Though clean, you may find that your cover suddenly doesn't fit on the foam pad any more.
The reason for this is that bench seats take up quite a bit of space and cannot be easily moved from their static location. If you think about it, how many times have you seen someone take a bench seat from a dining room to the kitchen to add additional space? It's not very likely, although if a room has sufficient room and a seating arrangement that would not change often, there very well could be a use for a dining room table with a bench seat. This is not to say that a bench seat is not useful, but having one in a dining room can severely limit the mobility and space of a room.
