If you are interested in being able to seat more people around your table and you do not have the kitchen nook space requirements to add more chairs, then you might consider bench seating. Free standing breakfast nook benches are similar to chairs in that they typically have four legs at the corners with perhaps a support leg or two in the center of a long bench. However, bench seats can accommodate more people than number of chairs they replace. Generally, you can fit one and a half people on a bench for every chair you replace. Kitchen bench seating is a great way to increase your seating capacity without making the table larger or squeezing in chairs uncomfortably.
The style is probably the most important factor when it comes to finding the perfect modern kitchen nook set. Some decorators will give generalizations like you cannot use bench seating in a modern kitchen and that is simply not true. Benches can have a place in a modern nook if they are done right. The only general rule that applies universally to all modern furniture is that the lines and design need to be simple. The table and chairs will have simple straight legs rather than ornately carved ones. The tops of breakfast nook chairs and benches will be straight lines rather than arched ones.
Houses with a breakfast nook or eat-it-kitchen typically have a formal dining room area intended to take dinner or supper into, depending where you are from. To make the most of the space, bench seating is recommended with fold-up seats allowing extra storage in that space. When that area is not in use, you can create a comfortable sitting area with plush pillows. When the area is in use, simply put the pillows under the seating to allow more people around the table. Farm-style tables are making a big comeback. People are feeling more disconnected in this ultra-social-networking era, and want to visit with people face-to-face. The table needs to fit with the space, but also needs to be large enough to fit everyone's plates, utensils, platters of pancakes, eggs and bacon on.
