If you were to randomly ask ten people what a "hutch" is, they would almost answer universally that it is a big wooden cabinet that sits in a dining room with dishes in it. Little if any thought would be given to the possibility that it could be a big wooden cabinet that sits in a kitchen. The funny thing is that the average kitchen is full of big furniture items. The stove, refrigerator, freezer, kitchen table and in some instances even the washer and dryer are all in the kitchen. The problem is that other than the kitchen table and chairs, most people don't envision a big piece of wood furniture in a kitchen.
Hutches can be found in a kitchen, a living room, a dining room, a den, or even a hallway. Whatever the location you're looking to fill, there's a hutch that can fit your needs. Also called a curio by those curious New Englanders, these merging of bookshelves and cabinets provide a place to display and store knick knacks, fine china or dinnerware, collectibles, or whatever you're looking to display proudly in your home. Hutches can be open designs or also enclosed in glass. The choice will depend on your lifestyle and what you're looking to place in the hutch. Valuable, fragile items - such as fine china or crystal dinnerware or stemware should be stored behind glass for an added layer of protection. Cute collectibles that may not carry much value such as common figurines or plastic dolls can be stored in an open hutch as can common dinnerware that is replaceable. Open hutches are not recommended for people with small children or pets such as cats and dogs as the animals and children can knock things out of the hutch and damage them.
Table linens: A neatly stacked and folded combination of color coordinated kitchen linens and tea towels can transform a hutch into a focal point of color. Canning supplies: Make your hutch reminiscent of a 1930's kitchen complete with grouped canning jars, lids, and other supplies. Mixing up unfilled containers with homemade jars of brightly colored preserves and fruits makes this especially attractive. If you have been thinking your dining room needs hutches, you may know that is the type of furniture you want, but do you know just what you really want to buy? There are a number of considerations to take into account with this furnishing. Want a little help? Here are some of the things you should keep in mind as you narrow down your options.
