Much like the chameleon, baker's racks are the kitchen furniture piece that can blend into any kitchen environment. It used to be that the baker's racks were an integral part of the country kitchen. They were a place where the bread and pastries for the day were set out to cool, and the scent of those fresh cooked goodies would be the alarm to the nostrils that would tell the whole family that it was time to get ready for dinner. While baker's racks today can serve that same role, for those with a love of baking, there are also a number of other services they have started to take on in the kitchen.
Most bakers' racks will have a main shelf that is wider than the rest of the selves this is because it was classified as the working area for bakers. The remainder 3 or 4 shelves will probably be all the same width and were usually used for storing baking equipment. Many bakers would set these racks up against or near a wall with a window for opening and cooling the baked goods. You can also use them for displaying houseplants in a sunny window location in a different room other than the kitchen. Some racks are not free standing on the floor; some hang from the ceiling and are used as cookware racks and pot racks. Many are attached to the wall for dish racks or spice racks.
On the top part of the bakers racks you have a number of options for uses. These are the shelves where the baked goods would set to cool. Now you can use this space as a display area. If you have some especially precious country kitchenware pieces you may want to show them off on the shelves so all your visitors can appreciate them. Or if you want to show off that you really can do some down home country cooking, you may want to use this space in the bakers racks to display your country cookbook collection or recipe holder. Some kitchens are a little tighter for space than others, and you may be thinking that you just can't fit bakers racks into your kitchen. If you have a spare corner, you can. There are corner bakers racks that will slip into that unused space and give you a lot of new and needed storage. You can even use bakers racks with a counter space in the middle as an extra area to prep for meals.
